Holiday Lighting Safety Tips

Chestnuts are roasting on the open fire inside, and you are stuck outside with Jack Frost going through boxes in the garage of last year’s holiday décor. What is your first step when you crack open the box? Do you look at the cords and plugs on each set of lights? Do you make sure there are no broken bulbs in the line? Do you test the lights before you put them up? There are many quick and easy things to do to make sure that your house is lit up safely and quickly to get you back inside beside that fire. Read our tips below to make sure you and your loved ones have a safe holiday season.

- Check all of your light sets. If a cord is damaged throw the set out. Do not attempt to repair the set

- Old strings of lights do not last forever. When the time has come to replace a set of lights, consider a set of LED’s. These bulbs emit less heat, and can save you money on your electricity bill

- Check your exterior outlets. Exterior lights should be plugged into a GFCI outlet. Not sure what that is? A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is used in areas where moisture is present to prevent electrical shock.

- Using short lengths to make a large one? Consider this before plugging sets into each other. You should only plug a maximum of 3 sets into one extension cord

- Replace all burnt out bulbs immediately

- Check each set of lights for broken bulbs. Remove these broken bulbs and replace them with a new one

- Keep outdoor cords above ground, and out of puddles. Make sure that they are not a trip hazard

- Look up before bringing out the ladder. Keep an eye out for overhead wires that could present themselves as a danger

- Use insulated lighting clips to hang lights. Do not use nails or staples as they can damage the cords

- Holiday lights are not meant for year-round use, as wires deteriorate over time in the outdoor elements. When the holidays are over, take them down and make sure they are properly stored in the off season

Put the safety of your loved ones first this year by following these easy tips. And don’t forget to turn the lights off when you are not home and when you are sleeping. You can save money on your electrical bill, and prevent an accident from happening during the holiday season! Now go outside, put some lights up and spread some cheer!
