Transient Voltage Studies

FAQ

What is a transient voltage event?

A transient voltage event is a brief, sudden spike or surge in electrical voltage that lasts for a very short duration — typically microseconds to milliseconds. Transients can be caused by lightning strikes, utility switching operations, capacitor bank switching, motor starts and stops, and other sudden changes in the electrical system. Despite their short duration, transient voltage events can cause significant damage to sensitive electrical equipment and electronic systems.

A transient voltage study is an engineering analysis that models and evaluates the transient voltage conditions in your electrical system. It identifies the sources of transient overvoltages, assesses their potential impact on connected equipment, and recommends mitigation measures to protect your system from transient-related damage.

Facilities with sensitive equipment — including variable frequency drives, programmable logic controllers, power electronics, telecommunications equipment, and computer systems — are particularly vulnerable to transient voltage events. A transient voltage study identifies the risk level in your system and ensures that appropriate protection measures are in place before equipment damage or process interruptions occur.

Transient voltage events pose the greatest risk to equipment with sensitive electronic components, including variable frequency drives (VFDs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), transformers, rotating machinery, and any equipment connected to power lines that are exposed to lightning or utility switching activity.

Depending on the findings of the study, KROON may recommend surge protection devices (SPDs), transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS), proper grounding and bonding improvements, shielded cabling, isolation transformers, or system configuration changes. KROON provides both the analysis and the implementation of recommended protection measures.

Yes. KROON provides end-to-end transient voltage services — from the initial study and analysis through to designing and installing the appropriate protection measures. This integrated approach ensures that the solutions implemented directly address the specific transient conditions identified in the study.

KROON provides transient voltage study services throughout Quebec, and through its network of subsidiary companies, across the rest of Canada.
